And Now for Revised Plan B

It has only been a few days and already I am seeing flaws in Plan B. Mostly in the "I will get up at 6am" portion. Ummmm...a nice thought but it has not worked out in practicality. First I had a late board meeting on Monday night so didn't get to bed until after midnight. No way was I setting the alarm for earlier that morning. Then we had a weather forecast of snow this morning so I didn't set the alarm early again. Lo and behold that was a sure fire way for the storm to pass us by. No real snow at 6:30 when I got up. I did get in an awesome workout this morning at the gym but the goal was to increase my running time and get me used to running outside. So now for revision one. I will get up at my normal time and run instead of showering. Then I will get Ben up and take him to school before showering. My apologies to those I meet in the morning. You are at least forewarned to stand back a few paces when greeting me. My hope is that I will manage to feel human enough to get dressed and actually go outside without a shower first. I've always been a shower first thing in the morning person. I am stunned by moms that can go without showering. How does their brain function without a shower to jumpstart it in the morning?

It has taken a few days but I am back up to running a good distance without stopping again. I'm sure one of the children will get sick and put another crimp in my workout. One thing I've learned though is that running can REALLY hurt your shoulders! Why didn't anyone tell me that. What is up with that. Man, are my shoulders stiff. Another thing I've learned is that I really will only run when listening to Motown songs. So now I am revising my ipod once again. I can really run when "Shot Gun" comes on and boy do I get the distance trying to run through the long version of "Heard It Through The Grapevine." Also good are my Bollywood songs from Slumdog Millionaire. Love it! Now I'm off to search itunes for motown sounds!

UPDATE:

Revised Plan B got off to a fine start this morning. I made a few wardrobe adjustments to help the old shoulders and that seems to have worked. I have to say it was damned cold out. About 5 degrees this morning and it actually hurt to breathe but I made my one mile run. Hopefully soon I'll be able to do more distance in that time. I was out less than half an hour but I think in time I will be able to do more distance in that time. That is my hope anyway. Didn't push myself as I want to continue this and I know I won't if I think it too unpleasant. In the short term it's enough to get out in the cold early in the morning. Isn't that enough to appease the weight loss gods. Can't they see I'm trying? I should get points for that.

Good luck with the revised plain B. try a PTA wash with the fresh up wipes from walmart, then you shower after the run. They really help when we are traveling in the motor home and not to expensive if you only use then as needed they are bigger then the childrens wipes and in with medical stuff my pharmacy.

Sore shoulders is usually a sign of unconsciously shrugging your shoulders while running. There's a couple things you can try in order to relax and loosen your shoulders.

Next time you're running at the gym on a treadmill, check out your form in a mirror. If, during your arm swings, you are carrying your arms hands above your waist line, you may want to trying dropping them to about waist level to relax your shoulders.

And in my marathon days, I found that during my long runs, occasionally interspersing a change in the motion of my arm swing (more left-to-right swinging, rather than forward and back) tended to relax my shoulders when then started to cramp up.

Good luck!

Sister Caryn the runner where are you with the advise. Physical Therapy has me move my arms forward as the other let goes backward. That is for balance and cordination.

Frank is right about the relax part. Your arm swing should be at your waist and close to your body. Hands should be "lightly" fisted with your "thumbs up" (thumbs ups keeps your elbows tucked in). Elbows are back. Arm swing is ALWAYS front to back (sorry Frank you should NEVER swing left to right). My shoulder pain was because my elobows would stick out and be to far forward so think about that. It's a rythem of arm swing and legs. Start slow bring left elbow back and lift the right knee. AND don't listen to fools that tell you to land "heel first" this only jams your knees! try a foot landing mid-foot (not toes) your foot should land directly below you NOT in front of you. It's in the push-off that you get momentum so keep your foot on the ground "roll" to a push off with your toes. Then rasie the knee up and let your foot fall. Use your "BUTT" to push thru. Relax forward don't try to stand straight up, it's like have a dog on a leash pulling you along. In fact it would be great to get the feel of this if you let Molly pull you around a little bit or try running downhill to get the posture I'm talking about. Love you
