Reality is Setting In

Got my first real taste of parenting two children today. Met a friend at the zoo. There is a great new play structure at the children's zoo that just opened. It is this huge tree house climbing gym. It is massive. So I have two to watch now, which is no big thing as Ben is pretty independent and it's an enclosed area. Well, all was fine and good until Ben yelled that he had to use the bathroom. With Ben it is always an emergency. He's holding his bottom and dancing. So I had to run with him to the bathroom. Ok no sweat, Sarina could stay with my friend and off we went. Nothing is ever that easy though. The bathroom is a short jog away. Just enough to make me out of breath so not that far but not close. However, Ben has this thing where he runs to the bathroom and then nothing happens. So he declares that he didn't have to go afterall. Back we go to the play area for five more minutes of play. Then he yells that he has to go again. But my friend has to get her son who is trapped somewhere on the play gym so I go to grab Sarina and she runs in the opposite direction to my friend. I think ok stay. Then she runs toward me and then swerves away again. In the meantime Ben is jumping up and down and refusing to go to the bathroom without me despite my exhortions that he go if he needs to run there. He refuses. Finally I get hold of Sarina and we start our run there but she is barely hanging on and is heavy so I'm doing more of a fast walk than a run and he is yelling for me to come and I"m yelling at him to just go. To make a long story short we get to the bathroom and once again he declares that he doesn't have to go. Arrrrghahhhh...you would think I'd be in better shape with all this running but no.

Later we went to introduce Sarina to Mark's workmates. We terrorized the office for almost an hour. Sarina pushed her stroller into people and things while Ben made a train out of the empty water jugs and rolled them loudly around the office. After we put an end to that he rolled pool balls on the floor. I'm sure they had enough of us by the time we left. Anyway, if you're reading this guys, ummm...sorry and thanks for the gift card!

Yes, now you're getting gist of it. Just wait until you have to take both kids to the bathroom and Ben's too old for the ladies room.

Kyra was anxiously questioning me as early as the trip to Nepal: if both kids were crying, who would I go to first? My answer at the time was Ethan because he was too young to understand or wait. But it's not that simple. Now I get he says/she says and I have to navigate who's right and who's wrong (and if tattling is involved, who's less wrong). Yipes!

Just wait: you'll be potty training Sarina in no time and do you want to bet that she'll be done long before Ben's timing issues are resolved?!
