My Big Boy

Today Ben got up early. I heard him go downstairs and I laid in bed for a few minutes thinking he would come up. When he didn't I went down and he was making breakfast. He was so proud of himself. He said "you go back to bed and rest Mommy. I'll take care of breakfast." Well, I was a little concerned but he assured me he would not touch the stove or the microwave as he had not "been trained on those yet." So off I went to take my shower while Sarina slept. I must admit to great trepidation but he really was so happy. He even pointed out that the water pitcher was not full so he could be trusted to pour it. He then asked if I still liked milk with my cereal. After my shower I came down with Sarina and he had our breakfasts all lined up. Water for Sarina in a sippy cup, water for me in a big cup and chocolate milk with a straw for him. Sarina got yogurt, I got cereal with milk poured (no spills in sight) and we each got a big bowl of CHEETOS. I was tempted to put the caboosh on the Cheetos but I didn't want to crush him so I pointed out that they were not that healthy for breakfast so he suggested his Speed Racer cereal and a yogurt drink for him. We all sat down and had a lovely meal and lo and behold no one really wanted the cheetos anyway. It was a nice morning.

Wow! What a big boy! Ethan has and can get his own snacks, but he can't reach the bowls (hmmm...good point), and he doesn't like milk on his cereal, or at least not at home. He can get his own drinks to a certain extent, but again can only reach his cups (and that's preferable). He usually asks permission for this stuff, but he won't wake us up to do so: he waits until one of us is up and about, then asks.

Unfortunately, while food skills are up, teeth brushing has encountered a serious set-back as he now complains that he doesn't know how to brush his teeth anymore. Not sure what event prompted this lapse of skills, but oh well. Encouragement that he can, in fact, do this nets only a really amazingly slow brushing, or mock-brushing in front of but not in his actual mouth. Sigh...

PS: I totally forgot that 1) Cheetos are a favorite of Ethan, too and 2) he tried to eat them for breakfast over the weekend. I was reminded of this just now when I related the Ben story and Ethan exclaimed that Cheetos "are too" a good food for breakfast (in a very offended tone).
